Beetlejuice is haunting the halls of Segerstrom Center from April 16-28.
It’s ghosts galore when Beetlejuice and his dead friends visit Segerstrom Hall in Beetlejuice: The Musical.
Based on the popular 1988 movie starring Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder, Catherine O’Hara, Alec Baldwin, and Geena Davis, this musical focuses on Lydia, daughter of widower Charles. Lydia’s mother recently passed away and her father already has a new girlfriend and plans for the run-down house they have moved into. The couple who previously lived there are dead and, unbeknownst to the buyers, are now ghosts who are trying to remain in the house but have a hard time being scary.
New York Magazine says Beetlejuice is "rowdy, cheeky and gleefully irreverent," while The Hollywood Reporter calls it "a riotous, rambunctious spectacular production with huge laughs, full-throttle performances and a mischievous sense of fun."
The show pays some homage to the film but it’s Lydia who makes Beetlejuice appealing to a younger generation of theater goers. Lydia is a depressed goth girl who has a nihilistic outlook on life. Like her peers, she is socially aware, leaves her emotions exposed and believes she is misunderstood. She misses her mother terribly and wishes she could come back from the dead. Beetlejuice wants to return to the land of the living and quickly realizes befriending Lydia could be his way back from the Netherland.
"Updating itself for Gen Z, Beetlejuice is a zany, old-school romp with charm and visual delight, re-creating movie spectacle while adding its own tricks" says the Denver Post. Audiences will love this haunting show’s special effects, costuming, hair and makeup designs, and spectacular lighting, and there is still time to get tickets and experience the magic for yourself.
