ACCESSIBLE ARTS AT THE CENTER
July 31, 2012 | Segerstrom Center for the Arts

In a continued effort to make performances more accessible and enjoyable for patrons with unique needs or disabilities, Segerstrom Center for the Arts introduces two new services: audio description and open captioning. During the Saturday, August 4 matinee of Broadway’s Tony Award®-winning La Cage aux Folles, the Center will introduce the audio description service for those with visual impairments, augmenting the current American Sign Language interpretation for the hearing impaired. Then, beginning with the November 17 performance of another great Tony winner, Memphis, the Center will provide open captioning for all Broadway and Curtain Call series performances. The Center’s sign language interpretation service has been available for many years in the Broadway Series during performances on the second Saturday matinees and the single Saturday matinee of Curtain Call Series performances.

The enhancements will add to the pleasure of attending live performances for those audience members with hearing and/or vision disabilities. Other Center accessibility services include lightweight, wireless Sennheiser System headsets at all performances at the Center to augment sound and large-print programs for all Broadway and Curtain Call series shows. Accessible seat locations for patrons with mobility impairments are available on both subscription and individual show basis. Wheelchair-accessible parking spaces at the Center Tower Garage, adjacent to the Center on Sunflower Avenue between Avenue of the Arts and Park Center Drive. A telephone equipped with a TTY is located in the Street Level lobby. The Center’s ushers are happy to escort and aid patrons who request assistance to and from the carriage circle area in front of the box office before and after performances. A registered nurse and first aid facility is available in the Street Level lobby during all performances.
